Research programs of the Department of Literature

The members of the Department of Literature participate in Greek and international conferences, publish papers in prestigious Greek and international scientific journals, and in honorary volumes, while also having organised important international conferences, namely:

The members of the Department of Literature are also involved in European Programmes as coordinators in the intercollegiate student exchange agreements (Erasmus) and as participants in the teaching staff mobility programmes. At the same time, foreign students attend the Department’s courses and specialist researchers are also invited to teach courses and seminars related to the various fields included in the Studies Programme.

The Department staff  are also responsible for many scientific research programmes funded by the Aristotle University Research Committee:

  •  “Thoughts of an Amazon:  transformations and reflections of the female identity through the European literary avant-garde of the 20th century.” (2013)
  •  “The impact of Yves Bonnefoy’s poetry on modern Greek poetry.” (2013)
  • The meaning of Aristotelian catharsis in 21st-century French drama, through the work and performances of French playwrights Olivier Py and Joël Pommerat. (2013)

The activities of the Department of Literature further include the publication of the annual scientific journal Synthèses, in cooperation with the two other Departments of the French School, as well as collaborations with scientific, cultural and educational bodies in the promotion of French culture and Francophony in general. Some indicative examples include:

  • An event dedicated to Picasso “Breathing life into his words … A few words about Picasso” held in 2008 at Telogleio Foundation, in cooperation with the School of Drama, AUTH, and the French Institute of Thessaloniki.
  • A special event organized by the Municipal Library of Thessaloniki, in honour of the author Maria Lampadaridou-Pothou (10 May 2010).
  • A theatrical performance based on excerpts from Maupassant’s short story, La maison Tellier (February 2011) in collaboration with Telogleio Foundation, on the occasion of the Toulouse Lautrec exhibition.
  • Scientific support and participation of the Department of Literature in the conference on Francophony with the title “From one language into the other” organized by the Hellenic-French School Kalamari of Thessaloniki (8 March 2013).
  • Book presentations in liaison with the French Institute of Thessaloniki and city bookshops.
