Εκδοτικές δραστηριότητες στο πλαίσιο του Μεταπτυχιακού Προγράμματος «Μετάφραση – Μεταφρασεολογία» του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών

Abstract
The paper presents the Inter-Faculty Postgraduate Programme “Translation-Translatology” of the University of Athens, describing its organisation, structure and objectives. In the main part, the paper focuses on the presentation of a major aspect, the publishing activities, in which the Programme is vigorously involved since its foundation, given the fact that the content of the translation seminars constitutes a material suitable to be published. In the 14 years of the Programme’s operation more than 40 books have been published, all of them literary translations from and into the five languages of specialization: English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Through these activities in the area of publishing, the Programme targets at the creation of an open and fruitful collaboration between the university and the publishing sector, as well as at the support of the translation team and the achievement of a constant enhancement in the educational process, since the idea of the publication of their projects urges postgraduate students to work more actively and responsibly for the implementation of their ambitions.

Abstract
The paper highlights the importance of volunteer translation for the professional consciousness of translators. Volunteer translation keeps the social dimension of translation services in a more and more communicative world. Nowadays several international organizations, starting with the UNO, ask for volunteer translation and offer contacts with NGOs, needing translation services, especially with the High Commissioner for Refugees, having a bureau in Greece, for texts on issues like legal protection, human rights, human resources, education, information, etc. Nevertheless, NGOs acting in the field of international development cooperation are matriculated in Greece by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which coordinates their activities not only in cases of urgently needed humanitarian help but as well in organizing conferences and seminars, for which translations are needed (βάση δεδομένων εθελοντών της YΔAΣ). For domestic humanitarian needs, specialized NGOs ask for volunteer translation services, e.g. for disabled persons, especially blind persons, addicted persons, immigrants, etc. Moreover, groups of specific social interests, like environment protection, specific for Greece environmental protection problems, look for volunteer translation services in order to inform the world wide forum about the specific greek environmental problems.
We may conclude that volunteer translation services provide translators with professional advantages, as the possibility of the free choice of texts, the absence of stress, etc., as well as with social advantages, as is above all the opportunity for human solidarity through inter-lingual mediation between societies and peoples.

Η εργασιακή πραγματικότητα για τους μεταφραστές, επιμελητές και διορθωτές στον ελληνικό εκδοτικό χώρο σήμερα

Abstract
The present note contains the transcript of a panel presentation delivered at the one-day workshop “The Profession of the Translator”, which took place on the 17th of October 2012 and was organized by the European Commission’s DG Translation. After briefly highlighting the work and role of the Association of Translators-Editors-Proofreaders, the piece provides an overview of the problems faced by professional translators, editors and proofreaders in the publishing sector, such as delayed or non-payments and poor labour terms. The paper concludes that a reversal of the current landscape of insecurity is only possible through the solidarity and organized collective action of the employees that are hit hard by such developments.

Πολιτισμικές μεταβλητές στη μεταφραστική πρακτική: ο απολογισμός ενός μαθήματος

Abstract
The paper highlights the educational potential of postgrad research production in exploring intercultural variation, for translation training purposes. It draws on the ‘Research Methodology in Translation Studies’ core course of the Interfaculty MA Programme ‘Translation-Translatology’, University of Athens, Fall 2011. Postgrads from the English, French and German language directions of the MA Programme contra¬sted target versions of literary texts as part of their assessment to identify parameters that affected target discourses. Research findings offered tangible evidence of shifts which reflected the potential of translation to shape discourses in intended ways. Target versions of texts by Bernard Shaw, Joseph Conrad, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Tennessee Williams, Alexandre Doumas, Victor Hugo, Ηonore de Βalzac, Gustave Flaubert, Albert Camus, Βertolt Βrecht, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, Franz Kafka, Ludwig Tieck and Aesop were contrasted to reveal varying narrative perspectives favoured in reception environments. Shifting societal values and norms, varying intentions on the part of translators in the light of socio-political developments, and shifting audience needs reveal an interaction of forces which influence translation practice. Some of the students’ research production will appear in the bilingual translation e-volume Interlingual Perspectives/ Διαγλωσσικές Θεωρήσεις for their poten¬tial to raise awareness of intercul-tural variation in translation training programmes. The strength of the enterprise lies in that it broadens the perspective of groups of students who usually focus on one language pair in exploring intercultural variation.

Η Υπηρεσία της Μετάφρασης με επίκεντρο τον πολίτη

Abstract
The Translations Service, Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the official state agency which is competent to provide official translation services in Greece. It consists of a combination of Civil Servants, who do the administrative work and authorized free-lance translators who translate the documents. The Translations Service is competent to translate both private and public documents submitted either by individuals/legal entities or other state agencies, organizations, ministries e.tc. The Translations Service covers a wide and diverse range of documents such as certificates, academic records, legal, technical, medical documents, e.tc. that require specialized knowledge and terminology. It is therefore absolutely necessary and imperative that the translation services be rendered in a reliable, trustworthy and timely manner always focusing on the citizens' best service. Translators need to be absolutely competent, both in terms of language and translation skills, as well as constantly up-dated as scientific fields develop rapidly. Among many of the advantages of this system are the quality of the translations, affordable pre-determined prices and state control for any likely counterfeit documents. What makes a good translator is a combination of language skills, experience, talent, will for learning and hard work.
